Effective January 17th, 2022, the federal government announced five additional glass sponge reefs protected by DFO closures in Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound. This is in addition to the designation of 13 glass sponge reef refuges in Howe Sound protected since 2016 from bottom contact fishing. The province of BC has also got on board with the expansion of the Halkett Marine Park boundary in 2017 to include the glass sponge reef growing on an underwater pinnacle. Lora Tryon of LTEC is a volunteer diver and board member of the Marine Life Sanctuaries Society (MLSS) and is involved in the protection of sponge reefs in Howe Sound.
